Fabric Buildings Meet the Challenges for Composting Environments

Composting environments offer a unique set of design challenges for any building type considered. High humidity and ammonia will impair the expected service life of most structures and reduce the quality and safety of the work environment. Close attention is required to the effectiveness of air/moisture containment and exhaust systems.

The Straw farm, an 18,000 square foot wood frame mushroom composting facility on South Parallel road in Abbotsford, collapsed after less than five years use. Close inspection of its galvanized metal truss plates showed an advanced state of corrosion.

A unique tent-within-a-tent concept was first developed by Dr. John Paul of Transform Compost Systems Ltd.  BuildWorks successfully applied this concept to a composting facility housed in a Megadome at the University of Alberta. This unique method isolates corrosive air, reduces costs, and provides a better and safer working environment inside composting facilities.
